Upon your employment at the Technion, you must complete the onboarding forms that appear on the Technion website (link here). These forms must be filled out and submitted to the Faculty Teaching Coordinator where you are employed. Please note that depending on your employment rank, you may need to fill out additional forms.
It is important to receive the employment specification from the Teaching Coordinator before the start of the semester. It is important to check that the number of employment units assigned to you matches the Employment Table (“Palmore Table”). It is important to check whether the employment units assigned to you are sufficient in terms of the actual required working hours.
An employment unit is a unit of measurement for your work. Therefore, different teaching tasks (lecture, tutorial, etc.) are worth a different number of employment units.
Based on the number of employment units, one can determine the job percentage and the salary (according to wage agreements).
The starting point for determining employment units for teaching tasks at the Technion is the Employment Table (“Palmore Table”). An employment unit is not a clear and absolute measure of workload; therefore, workload should be measured in working hours.
The conversion ratio between employment units and working hours is: 100 employment units = 15±3 working hours per semester.
For example: an allocation of 550 employment units means a maximum of 99 working hours over the semester. In other words, if you are required to work more than 99 hours, this is considered an excessive workload.
Membership in the union is not automatic but voluntary and personal. You must sign a membership form in order to become a member of the union – the form is located at the bottom of this page and on every page of our website.
The teaching staff at the Technion is represented before the Technion administration by the Teaching Staff Organization, which is the recognized labor union at the institution. Therefore, the employment contract is collective, and its content is the result of collective bargaining between the organization and the Technion administration. This negotiation leads, every few years, to the signing of a collective employment agreement and additional arrangements.
Once you begin working, the collective agreement applies to you.
According to our agreements, salary depends on rank, grade, seniority, scope of employment, and other factors.
You can check your expected salary using the salary calculator.
Seniority is also counted for years in which you did not actually work at the Technion:
Each year in which the employee is entitled to a B.A. counts as one year of seniority.
Each year in which the employee is entitled to an M.A. counts as one and a half years of seniority.
In addition, each year of mandatory military service (not career army) or national service counts as one year of seniority.
Professional seniority is not relevant for those employed in the “External Teacher” track, since no seniority increment is given.
Yes, this is possible depending on the needs of the faculty. However, once the standard postdoctoral training period ends, the Technion’s commitment to employment stability also expires. Employment after completing the PhD will be either as a Lecturer in the Teaching Fellow track or as an External Teacher.
Master’s degree students employed in teaching duties are entitled to a salary supplement according to the scope of their employment in frontal teaching (i.e., tutorials and laboratory instruction). The supplement is approximately 13%.

Yes. Every teaching faculty employee—except for external teachers—is entitled to an education fund. Each employee may choose the fund into which their contributions will be deposited. The employee is responsible for contacting the fund directly and submitting the enrollment forms to the Technion’s Payroll Department or to the Faculty Teaching Secretary.
For questions regarding pension funds and education funds, you may contact the Payroll Department: Irena Filiuk – irenafi@technion.ac.il
On our website, in the top menu, you can find the “Benefits” page—visit it to learn more about the benefits you are entitled to.
Membership is voluntary, and in order to become a member you must sign the membership form, which can be found at the bottom of the page.
The TSO represents you, but as long as you have not signed the form, you are not a member of the organization.
In order to receive compensation for reserve service days, the Technion’s Payroll Department submits a claim to the National Insurance Institute (for employees whose employment at the Technion exceeds 3 months). To do so, you must submit the required forms to the Payroll Department via the Faculty Teaching Secretary.
The forms you must fill out and submit after completing reserve service are:
Form 3010, detailing the reserve days served.
In addition, if you fulfilled your teaching duties despite your reserve service, you must fill out another form and have it signed by the Faculty Dean or Vice Dean (Declaration Form for Work During Reserve Duty).
PhD students are entitled to a special budget intended for travel to conferences and for maintaining scientific connections. The fund is personal, cumulative, and designated for participation in academic activities in Israel and abroad, such as: attending conferences, scientific conventions, professional association memberships, and purchasing a computer.
The allocation to the fund is annual and is provided in US dollars. The amount is determined according to the PhD student’s rank and annual employment scope, and is updated each year by VERA (Committee of University Heads in Israel).
For example, the 2023/24 allocation (for full-time annual positions) was:
Assistant A: $2,300
Assistant B: $3,304
Doctoral Instructor: $4,279
The allocated amounts accumulate, meaning that funds not used in a given year remain in the fund for future use. Upon the end of employment, the PhD student receives the balance of the fund minus tax.
Teaching Fellows are entitled to a special budget for conference travel and maintaining scientific relations during their employment period. This budget allows for the funding of academic activities, including participation in training programs and covering expenses for professional development in Israel and abroad.
A Teaching Fellow may request up to $3,000 per academic year from the Technion. This budget is allocated per academic year and is not cumulative. If it is not used within the year, it cannot be redeemed at the end of the employment period.
